Sailing on the Lake

On Monday the 11th of November the Optimists(Sailboat) hit the water for an exhilarating day on the lake. Me and Kyle set out on the Yellow Lion. Our main objective was to stay as dry as possible and not capsize. I pretty much lost my voice screaming at Kyle stay straight or turn the other way. The weight balance wasn't helping either and we were basically capsizing the boat without even moving. We then played a game which didn't help the capsizing problem because of the constant direction changes. One boat ran the ball over and couldn't find it for ages until it popped up again. That pretty much ended our day and we then raced back and packed the boats up before swimming around the submerged dock like a swarm of sharks. It was a very fun and frightening day and I hope I
 can do it again.

Snow Camp 2019

Three weeks ago Te Kinga and Kotuku went on a school camp to Arthur's pass and Mt Cheeseman. We left on Monday to go the Arthur's pass outdoor education center where would stay the first night. We arrived and unpacked the cars. We settled in then had a talk about the rules and the kind of activities we were going to do. We then went outside and played a game called buddy which was like a tandem version of Simon says. We finished the game and had a snow fight which turned out to be an ice fight which hurt a lot. We were taken to a walking track and got to learn about all the Maori travelers that came through Arthur's pass and the way they came back because they could not come back through Arthur's pass due to the weight of the jade they bring back from the West coast. After our walk we settled down and rested up for half an hour then went out for a treasure hunt. The treasure hunt went for about half an hour which we were forced to do with no walkie talkie because Zak was pressing the wrong button for the whole time until we made it back. We called it a day and there was some dinner followed by another game and dessert before going to bed. We woke up to yelling and screaming which would become a tradition. We all lumbered in to the dining room with heavy eyelids to see that we would be staying a bit longer due to high winds and rain. After a couple hours we departed for Mt Cheeseman on the hour long drive. It felt longer than an hour but we finally made it with the wind whistling past the cars. We got in the lodge and settled down. We waited a few minutes until the co-chief of the ski field Sam came in and talked to us about all the rules and regulations and then we were told our rooms and shuffled in, unpacked then regrouped back down at the lodge. We waited until the weather died down a little and went outside in blizzard like conditions for a play in the snow. We had a good hour long crazy fest then went back inside for a lot of card games, chicken (The game) and finally dinner. After all the we played more card games had some Milo and went to bed. We woke up to yelling and screaming (I said it was a tradition) and lumbered out of bed out to the lounge/dining area for some early breakfast which was some toast and cereal. We then played (You guessed it) more card games and waited until the weather report. They said it would be all good to go skiing for the day. We were all jumping with joy and excitement. We got our ski boots and skis then went out for a good day of skiing. There were a couple of T-bar accidents with people sliding right down the hill. I went right to the top of the mountain which is a tradition for me because I want to conquer as many ski fields as I can. After that we had lunch and were told we could have one more run. I did so then gave my ski gear back and packed up my gear, filed it into the back of the car and we drove home. 

Miranda Jane Caird art

At school we have been talking to Miranda Jane Caird. She is a famous New Zealand artist and has made many different pieces of art over her career. Her art inspired us to try and mimic her style in our own art. We used pastel colour mixing and black dye to create our pictures. Here is my picture and one of Miranda's side by side.

Science Pendulum

Aim/Hypothesis: See how mass really affects the period of the pendulum. We could find
no evidence of this online but it goes against common sense so we decided to test it. Our
hypothesis is that it wouldn’t affect it at all. (Thomas thought that it would)

Method: 

1: String up two containers to a solid bar or similar object (we did it to the monkey bars)
Make sure they are the same length from the bar (you may need to do a control test with
no water to make sure you have got it right.

2: Fill one of them with some water (we put in 200ml). The first container weighed 84g
(without water) and the second weighed 284g

3: draw them both up to the same height and release at the same time.

4: record results.

Results: First of all we did it with two glass beakers on the end of the strings but then the one one with the water in it smashed after the string snapped. So then we got to plastic containers and some stronger strings. When we tested it they didn’t swing backward and forward at the same time like the control test. We thought that the period of the pendulum had changed because they weren't even any more and that google must have been wrong, but we were wrong and after extensive research and small scale testing we found that the period hadn’t changed but the more massive one kept its momentum better due to its mass and therefore swung for longer and faster. But they both crossed the middle at the same time. We were tricked by our eyes.

Te Kinga work interviews

In class recently we have been interviewing people in the local community about their work life. We have had four people so far and all have been as interesting as the last. Today we had Jarred (Zak and Cameron's Dad) and he talked about all his jobs and some of the skills he thought were important to have when going into work. The skills were technology skills, communication skills, leadership skills, a good attitude and being able to ask for help. Here is my reflection, I think it was interesting how Jarred has done lots of different jobs including blinking the eye of a puppet fish on a kids t.v show and helping people figure why their pot plant powered phone wouldn’t work. It was also interesting that he had worked in the air force as an I.T guy.

How To Show Integrity (NOT)

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!!

Once upon a time there was a nice, caring principal named Shirley.

She lived in a cottage over a river which was sadly half burned down due to the high amount of murder cases in the area.

She has also been accused of witchcraft and has been a victim of multiple attempted murders herself.

There are also rumours going around that she has been accepted into Hogwarts School For Witchcraft And Wizardry.

This story is not about her house or the fact she might be a witch (she probably is though), it is about her trusty old 2004 Mazda 6 manual station wagon.



Our story starts on a cold misty morning with the ghost cloud covering the streets...

Shirley was speedily driving towards the school at which she worked.

As she was turning a blind corner a man in an orange Scamborghini was burning rubber and terrorizing tourists.

She pulled up beside him and looked through the window at the early 20’s aged man with dark shades and a bandana.

She thought that she should report him for dangerous driving…

but instead she decided she should show him who’s boss.

They shared a mighty death stare before coming to an agreement that they should have a drift-off which was cleverly hid from all emergency services and no one was arrested (we think, we really aren’t told anything).

They started their drift off and the smell of burned down tires filled the air around them (Skrt Skrt, Sorry meant to be telling you the story). It was beginning to look like Shirley would be the loser once again (yes, this has happened multiple times) until she pulled out her lucky gearstick and put her car into extreme drift mode (I didn’t think it was a thing either). She pulled ahead and was winning until the Scamborghini got the lead back. Shirley knew the only way she could win was to play dirty.

She nudged the back of the young mans sick ride causiong him to spin off the side of the road… He was left in a mangled burning car with two broken legs, one severed arm, a half sliced and burning face. An agonising, blood curdling scream filled the air “arrghrghrghrghrhggr…” It stopped suddenly as the blood in his throat began to clot and he died a slow painful death. Shirley then went to the panelbeaters and in the accident report she put

“Hit a pole getting groceries”. She never spoke a word of what had occurred that day. Shirley then used magic to remove all memories of that incident from her mind.

Weekly Reflection Wk/1 Term 4

This week has felt very short but in that short amount of time I have wanted to get things done quickly so I have completed a lot of work. I have got through my personal inquiry quickly and am hoping to get that done in the 5th week. I have almost completed 3rd grade khan and have done 20 mins each day some days doing more than 45 mins. This has been a very confusing week because pet day has been and we had to prepare for that so there has not been as much time to do work but our timetable for our personal inquiry has helped clarify what we are doing and helped us work around pet day. This has been a good week for learning and working yourself.

Weekly Reflection Wk 8

This week has been a pretty busy week. I have done well to keep up and have been very successful in doing my work to a high standard. I can cope with not having a structured day and not being told we have to do a certain subject at a certain time. I will be fine with doing my own work at any time and will focus on things that are close to becoming . I have completed my Kiwi kids news featured article, have started my personal inquiry and have finish all my fairy tale writing and scratch. I have made progress on my water colour portfolio and am hoping to finish it by the end of next week.

Rapunzel Moment in time Sentence

Original sentence: No one dared enter this garden.

My Version: The sprouting piece of land was untouched by human matter, for the consequences that lay ahead for the daredevil that planted down their handcrafted boot on that garden were horrible.

Why I chose this sentence: I chose this sentence because it was one of the first sentences and if it was as it was before I changed it they would not read the piece of writing due to the lack of secrecy in the sentence and wouldn’t read the story to the end non stop because other activities would be more exciting.

What I changed: I changed the level of secrecy of the sentence so it hooks the reader and makes them want to keep reading because they know there will be more sentences that made them more excited about the story. I also changed the length of the sentence because a crucial sentence to keep people reading the story shouldn’t have six words because it shortens the story and there is less chance to make the reader enjoy reading the story.

Weekly reflection Wk/7

This week has been confusing and has been hard to keep up with everything. Even though it has been hard to keep up I have tried hard to keep up and have done surprisingly well. We have been learning about being connected and I have tried to be connected with everyone and trying to make the connection stronger between me and everyone else in the school. I completed my Hansel and Gretel story after being behind and also my Kiwi kids news featured article. I have done well in math because I have been practicing. This week has been a good week.

Weekly reflection Wk 6

This week has been very productive for me. I have completed my Kiwi kids news article for this week and have almost completed my Three little pigs writing which was overdue. When Dean says SDL I think that it is time that we have to finish things that we haven't already. Sometimes if this is called then I do things that are overdue that I need to do. When I have been behind and I need to finish something I go to Dean to see if there is a fast but still educational way to do it so that it doesn't take ages and I will become behind on other things. I think that as of now I will not use S.D.L time to do my personal Inquiry because I still have things I am behind on. I have enjoyed this week and found it very good from a learning point of view. I hope next week is as productive as this week.

Manu Ginobili leads argentina to gold at athens olympics This day in history

“Manu goes up for the shot and sinks it! That puts the lead up to 15” exclaimed the radio announcer. Our whole household erupted with excitement as the argentine team toppled Italy by 15 and won gold at Athens. The radio announcer said he fell out of his chair with excitement and our whole family screamed with laughter. After the game Manu Ginobili was in his locker room being part drowned in the champagne showers. After the long plane ride home the argentina team were welcomed home with cheers and tears. I waited for the parade to come past me so I could ask Manu how he became so good. I asked Mum if she could lift me so I could talk to Manu for I was only 4. She lifted me up as Manu came past. I asked him how he became so good at basketball. He replied with “Hard work and dedication". 14 Years later I sat crying in my room after hearing Manu had retired from basketball. I just knew I had to have a great season in my NCAA Virginia team. My Mum called me down for breakfast “Francisco Caffaro stop crying in your room it is not the end of the world”

Weekly reflection week 5

This week has gone well because I have been on task most of the time. I have been behind on things then finished them very quickly and had them done before they became overdue. Trello has been a crucial role in helping me stay on task because I can plan my day and then keep track of what I have completed and what I need to complete. I have continued planning my personal inquiry and have ideas on what is gong to happen but have made progress in the writing or the movie other than research. I have been trying hard to level up on Khan because I have been on third grade for a while. I completed my Hansel and Gretel scratch and have started describing my witch and the forest for my story. I completed all the kiwi kids news questions and have started next weeks questions. I have made a map for our farm visit because it is one of my Dad's farm so I have helped Dean with organizing what we are going to do while we are there. It has been a good week work wise and I have had fun doing the Basketball practices because I love basketball and I love to think I am the best at school but Dean has the height advantage so combined with his skills he is the best which makes me the best student I think? It has been a great week.

1. I think lying is bad because lying makes the situation worse because the person you’re telling may think that the lie is true and they might let you away with something horrible like punching someone or breaking something expensive. I think honesty is important although you may get punished it would be a better punishment than if you lied and the person you’re telling found out that you were lying the punishment would be worse.
2. You may get away with what you did but in many cases you don’t. I would be lying to say I haven’t lied before which is why I won’t say it but many horrible time I have got away with doing something bad. If you didn’t like one of your siblings and you told your parents that they did it they would get in trouble and you might feel good depending on what type of person you are.
3. I think it is human nature because no one wants to get in trouble and we lie to get out of being in trouble and we get to do the normal things we do. Maybe we lie so that our schedule doesn’t change because we have already planned what we are going to do and we want to do what we have planned and if we don't get to do what we planned we will get annoyed.
4. I don’t think lying will ever stop because it is human nature although I think there will be easier ways to tell if someone is lying like lie detector and you put a pair of glasses on and it scan the person you are interrogating and if they are lying the glasses will buzz and they will be caught.
5. Haven’t really lied to kahi before an if I have I cannot remember lying to him. I have lied to people before but I think everyone I lied to has found out I was lying.
6. Breaking News: Prison are overflowing many new prison have to be built to accommodate all the prisoners. “Woah this is too serious” Said the prime minister. As her Two ic I had to comfort her in this situation but I wasn’t sure anything would work. We had to make a plan of action against rising prison population. We decide we would have to double up prison cells and hope that works. 4 MONTHS LATER Breaking news: 128 prisoners killed by roommates in the last 4 months could this be the end of our prime ministers reign at the top seat.
